What is Selank?
Selank is a lab-made peptide, a short chain of seven amino acids, sold in Russia as a non-prescription nasal-drop medicine for anxiety, nervous exhaustion and stress-related problems. Online it is popular as a "calm focus" peptide and is often paired with its sister peptide, Semax. [1], [2]
It was developed in Moscow by the Institute of Molecular Genetics and the Zakusov Institute of Pharmacology. The starting point was tuftsin, a natural four-amino-acid peptide (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg) that acts on immune cells. The developers added three amino acids (Pro-Gly-Pro) to slow its breakdown, giving Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg-Pro-Gly-Pro, or TKPRPGP. Its development code was TP-7, its formula as a free peptide is C33H57N11O9 (751.9 g/mol), and the medicine uses it as an acetate salt. [3], [4], [5], [6], [7]
Selank is a registered medicine in Russia: 0.15% nasal drops, registered in 2009 and available without a prescription since 2017. It is investigational elsewhere: not approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and we found no approval in Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom or the European Union. Its human research is almost entirely Russian and comes largely from the developers' network. [5], [2], [8], [9], [10], [11], [12]
Some websites say Selank could never be patented. It was: as an anxiety medicine in Russia in 1999, followed by Russian patents for other uses based on animal work. [6], [13], [14]
Typical Selank Protocols
| Source | Amount each time | Frequency | Total per day | Course |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Current Russian label (2025) | 2 drops in each nostril (about 300 mcg) | 3 times a day | About 900 mcg | 14 days; may be repeated after 1–3 weeks |
| Original label (2009) | 300–900 mcg (4–12 drops, no more than 2–3 per nostril at once, repeated after 15 minutes) | 3 times a day | 900–2,700 mcg | 10–14 days; may be repeated after 1–3 weeks |
| Anxiety trials (2008–2015) | 900 mcg (12 drops) in the 2008 trial; the later trials give only the daily total | 3 times a day (2008 trial) | 2,700 mcg | 14 days Adults with anxiety disorders, compared with tranquilizers [16], [17], [18] |
On the current label, each dose is 2 drops in each nostril, 3 times a day, for 14 days, which works out to about 900 mcg a day; the course can be repeated after 1–3 weeks. The label does not state the drop size; the microgram figures use the original instruction's 75 mcg per drop. The anxiety trials used the top of the older label range, 2,700 mcg a day. [1], [15], [16]
What doses do research nasal sprays use?
Outside Russia, most people use a spray mixed from a research-grade powder, or a ready-made spray, not the licensed drops. These schedules come from protocol websites.
| Example | Amount each time | Frequency | Total per day | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Low | 200–300 mcg to start, then 300–500 mcg a day in total | Once or twice a day | 300–500 mcg (stated maximum 600–800) | 4–8 weeks, then a 2–4-week break |
| Mid | 300 mcg | 2–3 times a day | 600–900 mcg | 10–14 days on, then 7–10 days off |
| High | The daily amount split into 2–3 sprays | 2–3 times a day | 600–2,700 mcg | 14–21 days on, then 1–3 weeks off |
Spray pages most often give 250–500 mcg each time, one to three times a day (250–1,500 mcg a day), with courses from one week to a month. That ranges from well below to above the label's 900 mcg and stays below the 2,700 mcg used in the trials. [22], [23]
What doses are used for Selank injections?
| Example | Amount each time | Frequency | Total per day | Duration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Low | 100–300 mcg | Once daily | 100–300 mcg | 1 month on, 1 month off |
| Mid | 250–500 mcg | Once daily, in the morning | 250–500 mcg | 2–4 weeks, then a break of the same length |
| High | 250–500 mcg | 1–3 times a day | 250–1,500 mcg | 2–4 weeks, then 1–2 weeks off |
For injections, the recurring pattern is 250–500 mcg once a day, often starting at 250–300 mcg, for 2–4 weeks, followed by a break of 2–4 weeks. [25], [21], [27], [28]
Read these cautions before the numbers. Human studies gave Selank only as nose drops, in short courses, mostly to Russian adults with anxiety disorders. The spray and injection schedules come from protocol websites, not trials. [1], [16]
- Do not stop or cut back prescribed medicine to try Selank. That includes antidepressants, benzodiazepines, sleeping pills, stimulants and mood stabilisers. Selank was studied added to, or compared with, anxiety medicines, never tested as a replacement for them, and stopping some of them suddenly can cause serious withdrawal effects. One public account describes sudden panic episodes after coming off an antidepressant and relying on Selank instead. In community education groups, some people describe making these changes without their prescriber. [18], [29], [30]
- The label rules it out under 18, in pregnancy and breastfeeding, and with an allergy to its ingredients. [1]
- Home-made sprays and research-powder injections are unverified. Their strength, purity and sterility are unknown, and there are no human safety data for injected Selank. [8], [31]
- N-acetyl Selank amidate is a different molecule. It is sold under similar names, has no published human data, and its doses do not translate. [32]
- Read the units. mcg means micrograms; 1 mg equals 1,000 mcg. The licensed 0.15% drops hold 1,500 mcg per mL, about 75 mcg per drop; a home-made spray holds whatever its mix and pump deliver. "Per nostril" amounts are half of the dose. On an insulin syringe, a unit measures liquid, not Selank; check any amount with the reconstitution calculator.
- Titration Changing the amount in steps
- The current label gives one fixed dose; the original allowed a single dose to be raised by repeating the drops after 15 minutes. [1], [15] Injection pages often start at 300 mcg for two weeks and move to 500 mcg. [28] One nasal-spray page starts at 250 mcg once a day for 2–3 days. [33] One page presents the move from 900 to 2,700 mcg a day as a titration, which neither the label nor the trials describe. [34]
Low, mid and high are alternatives, not steps to move through. The cited references give the full details.
Where protocols differ: drops, sprays, injections and breaks ↓
Where these numbers come from
Label table. The first row reproduces the current Russian instruction for Selank 0.15% nasal drops (last changed July 15, 2025), checked against the manufacturer's 2017 instruction and the Vidal drug reference. The second row is the original instruction from the 2009 registration, still reproduced online, which gives single doses of 300–900 mcg and 900–2,700 mcg a day. The current label does not state a drop size; the microgram figures use the original instruction's 1 drop = 0.05 mL = 75 mcg, which the developer booklet and a Parkinson's study also use. The trial row comes from the full texts of the medazepam and phenazepam trials. [1], [36], [37], [15], [38], [39], [16], [17]
Spray and injection tables. Each row is one publisher's complete schedule: nasal low from a US compounding pharmacy's clinical guide, mid from DosingCalc and high from Peptide Dosing Protocols [19], [20], [21]; injection low from PeptaBase, mid from PeptideDeck and high from PeptideFox [24], [25], [26]. We compared 40 captured dosing pages (38 protocol rows) and re-checked the principal dose figures against the captured pages on September 24, 2026. The "most common pattern" sentences summarize the largest group of pages that state the same range; no median is calculated because most pages give ranges, not single amounts. Across 16 injection pages, the lower end of the stated range was most often 250 mcg and the upper end 500 mcg.
We keep amounts, frequency and course length together, rather than taking a low number from one page and a duration from another. Pages with clear arithmetic errors, N-acetyl Selank amidate rows, blends with unstated component amounts and animal doses do not define the typical comparison. No page cites a human study for injected Selank, and we found no treatment study. [40], [32], [41]
Row-specific notes: the nasal low row's stated maximum (600–800 mcg a day) is shown beside the maintenance range; the nasal high row repeats the trial's top daily amount without the trial's drop product; the injection low row is a "daily" schedule from a page that also gives 200–500 mcg 3–5 times a week. [19], [21], [24]
What is Selank commonly used for?
Most people look into Selank for anxiety: everyday worry, stress, social or performance anxiety, and anxiety that keeps them awake. Others want calmer focus, often alongside Semax, or hope it will help them come off a prescribed anxiety medicine. [42], [43], [44]
The Russian label lists anxiety and panic attacks, nervous exhaustion (neurasthenia), mood swings, sleep problems, low willpower, insecurity with other people and difficulty adjusting to stress, all in adults. The human studies tested some of these; the others rely on the label, personal accounts and animal research. The sections below keep them apart. [1]

No placebo-controlled treatment trial. Most studies come from the developers' own research network.
Anxiety and stress
This is where the human research is. Three Russian trials in adults with anxiety disorders gave 2,700 mcg a day as nose drops for 14 days and compared Selank with a tranquilizer: similar anxiety relief to medazepam, less relief than phenazepam after two weeks, and more responders than phenazepam a week after both were stopped. None used a placebo, and none describes hiding which treatment people received. The human research section gives the details. [16], [17], [18]
Russia's 2024 national guideline for generalized anxiety disorder does not mention Selank. [45]

Situational and performance anxiety
Many people use Selank only before a stressful event, such as a presentation, a flight or a dental visit, rather than every day. One described giving a talk to 150 people after 200–250 mcg by injection 2–3 hours earlier; others in the same thread felt nothing. [42], [46] In the first trial, 17 of 42 patients improved suddenly within the first days and the rest gradually, which is the closest the studies come to this use; no study has tested single doses before a stressful event. [16]
Sleep
The label lists sleep problems among the anxiety symptoms Selank is meant for, but no study has tested it as a sleep treatment. In the medazepam trial, night-time sleep problems were among the anxiety symptoms that eased, and in the phenazepam trial 13% of the Selank group reported sleeping longer by day 14. [16], [17] People use it at bedtime when racing thoughts keep them awake, and reports split: some fall asleep more easily, while others describe lying awake, nightmares or daytime sleepiness. [1], [47], [48], [49], [50], [51] In community education groups, sleep is one of the most common reasons for bedtime injections, and reports of vivid dreams and next-morning grogginess cluster at the higher bedtime doses.
Focus, memory and "brain fog"
This is another common reason, usually with Semax, and the least studied. An open pilot in 15 people aged 54–76 with anxiety reported better attention, short-term memory and reaction times after two weeks, and the trials recorded less tiredness (asthenia) as anxiety eased. No study has tested focus or memory in healthy adults. [52], [16]
Coming off benzodiazepines or antidepressants
This is the riskiest use. In one open trial, people who continued Selank for a week after stopping phenazepam were reported to have milder withdrawal, and a manufacturer-hosted report added Selank to an antidepressant; rat and mouse studies tested alcohol, morphine and tranquilizer withdrawal. None of this tested Selank as a replacement. [18], [53], [54], [55] In public forums and community education groups, people describe tapering antidepressants, benzodiazepines, sleeping pills or stimulants on their own with Selank, sometimes followed by panic attacks. Any change to a prescribed medicine belongs with the prescriber. [30], [56]
Immune and antiviral claims
Because it comes from tuftsin, Selank is sometimes sold as an immune booster. The evidence is animal and laboratory work: gene changes in mouse spleen, calmer inflammatory signals in stressed rats and less flu virus in cells and mice given it beforehand. One study in patients with anxiety measured blood immune signals, without a comparison group. [57], [58], [59], [60]
Other uses you may come across
Small Russian reports added Selank to treatment for asthma, eczema, menopause symptoms, tension headache, back pain, binge eating, Parkinson's-related anxiety and tiredness after COVID-19 (see human research). [61], [62], [63] ADHD-related restlessness and post-traumatic stress come up in public accounts but have not been studied. [64], [65] In community education groups, some people also add it for jittery or flat feelings on weight-loss injections.
Some community education groups list Selank for adrenal insufficiency (Addison's disease), while others say no peptide treats it. Selank has never been studied in adrenal disease.
Where do Selank protocols differ?
Selank amounts look simple until you notice that people count in drops, sprays, micrograms per nostril and syringe units, for three different kinds of product. Here is what changes between them and why it matters.
Is the number for one drop, one spray, one dose or the whole day?
A drop of the licensed drops holds about 75 mcg; a spray holds whatever its mix and pump deliver. The current label no longer gives the drop size, so every microgram conversion rests on the original 2009 instruction (4 drops = 0.2 mL = 300 mcg). Studies were not consistent either: one counted 4 drops as 150 mcg. [1], [15], [66]
Websites add their own errors: one calls the label dose 450 mcg a day (it is about 900), another says each drop holds 150–300 mcg, and a spray recipe labelled "0.15%" is ten times weaker than the licensed drops. [40], [67], [68] Several pages say the trials used about 900 mcg a day; they used 2,700 mcg. [25], [69], [20]
For home-made sprays, the strength depends on the mix: 10 mg in 2 mL gives about 500 mcg per 0.1 mL pump, and a mix of 2–3 mg per mL gives 200–300 mcg, if the pump really delivers 0.1 mL. [20], [70] In community education groups, a common mix is 10 mg in 10 mL, about 100 mcg a spray.

How much a day? Label, trials and websites
Micrograms (mcg) a day, by source and route. 1 drop of the 0.15% drops ≈ 75 mcg (original instruction).

Amounts, not effects. Routes differ; no human study compared them.
The studied route at lower doses
Pages that recommend nose drops because they are "the studied route" often give 250–500 mcg a dose or 300–900 mcg a day, well below the 2,700 mcg a day the trials used. [22], [69] Community education groups show the same split: educators describe nasal use as the evidence-based route, then suggest 600–1,000 mcg a day, and many members use one or two sprays a day. A lower amount by the studied route is still not a studied dose.
Nose drops, nasal spray or injection?
The human studies gave Selank as nose drops. Injections are common online, and people split on which route they prefer, but apart from one single-dose brain-scan study there are no human data on injected Selank: no safety study, no blood levels, no dose comparison. In mice, the two routes both eased anxiety but changed different brain receptors, so they may not be interchangeable. [71], [25] In community education groups, some people found that one route did nothing while the other worked, in both directions.
Every day, or only when needed?
The label and the trials used a fixed daily course. Online, people also take it only before stressful days, three or four times a week, or on weekdays for months. [1], [46], [72] None of these patterns has been compared.
Morning or bedtime?
The label spreads doses across the day, three times daily. Websites disagree: one advises morning doses for focus and evening doses for anxiety, another advises avoiding it within two hours of sleep because some people find it stimulating. [1], [24], [73] Reports of lying awake after a bedtime dose support the second caution for some people, while others use it to fall asleep. [48], [47]
How long, and are breaks needed?
The label course is 14 days, repeated after a 1–3-week gap if needed; the longest study course lasted 30 days. [1], [63] Websites instead describe 4–8-week courses, cycles such as 4 weeks on and 4 off, or 1 month on and 1 month off, usually to "prevent tolerance". [28], [24], [19] No study has tested tolerance or break lengths. In public forums and community education groups, some people use it daily or on weekdays for months to a year, far longer than any study.
How do micrograms convert to syringe units?
Selank for injection is sold as a freeze-dried powder in a vial that is mixed with sterile water (reconstitution). On a U-100 insulin syringe, units measure volume, not drug. For example, a 5 mg vial (5,000 mcg) mixed with 2 mL gives 2,500 mcg per mL, or 25 mcg per unit, so 250 mcg is 10 units and 500 mcg is 20 units. The same 250 mcg is 5 units if the vial is mixed with 1 mL. Doserly's reconstitution calculator works this out for any vial and shows each step. [25]
What happens when you stop Selank?
In the trials, stopping after 14 days caused no withdrawal symptoms, and in the phenazepam comparison the Selank group had more responders a week after stopping than at the end of treatment, while phenazepam's effect faded. The anxiety trials followed people for at most a week after stopping. Two smaller add-on reports, in binge eating and eczema, checked again about two weeks later and said the improvement had held. How often anxiety returns over months is unknown. [74], [75], [16], [17]
- The label says Selank does not cause dependence or habituation, and allows a repeat course after 1–3 weeks. It gives no tapering advice. [1]
- Coming off other medicines. In an open add-on study, people who kept taking Selank for a week after phenazepam was stopped were reported to have milder withdrawal; that is not a test of Selank as a substitute. [18]
- Personal accounts range from no change on stopping, or a slow return to baseline over weeks, to anxiety returning within a course break or within an hour of a late dose. [72], [76], [77], [78] In community education groups, some long-term users say they cannot take breaks because their anxiety comes back. A return of the original anxiety is different from withdrawal, but neither has been studied.
- Unwanted effects. One person's panic attacks slowly settled after stopping a compounded spray, and in community education groups, anxiety and poor sleep that began with Selank settled within about a week of stopping. [79]
Source-by-source comparison of Selank dosing pages
How do the dosing pages compare?
Unit key: 1 milligram (mg) = 1,000 micrograms (mcg). One drop of 0.15% Selank ≈ 75 mcg (original instruction); 0.15% = 1.5 mg per mL.
Six pages reproduce the current label, about 900 mcg a day in three doses for 14 days: Peptide Initiative (two pages), All About Peptides, PeptiTools, Peptide Dosages and PeptidesExplorer, which miscalculates it as 450 mcg. [80], [34], [81], [69], [82], [40] Others repeat the older 900–2,700 mcg range or stretch it to "250 mcg to 3 mg a day". [83], [67]
Injection pages fall into a few families. The largest gives 250–500 mcg once to three times a day for 2–4 weeks: PeptideFox, PeptideDeck, Peptide Dosing Protocols and PepGuru. [26], [25], [21], [27] A shared table steps from 300 mcg in weeks 1–2 to 500 mcg in weeks 3–4 (PeptideDosage.org and Peptides.ID). [28], [84] A lower family gives 100–300 mcg a day and 750–1,000 mcg by nose, credited to one physician's protocol book (Guide to Peptide, PeptaBase). [85], [24] One page stands alone at 1 mg two or three times a week, 8 weeks on and 8 off. [35]
Which pages contain errors?
PeptidesExplorer computes the label as 450 mcg a day (it is about 900). Pure Tested Peptides says a drop holds 150–300 mcg (about 75). Know Your Peptide's "0.15%" spray recipe is ten times weaker than the licensed drops. ParaHealth turns 2–3 drops per nostril three times a day into 1.5–2.25 mg (it is 0.9–1.35 mg). PeptideDeck, PeptiTools and DosingCalc say the trials used about 900 mcg a day (they used 2,700 mcg). [40], [67], [68], [33], [25], [69], [20]
Pages also misreport the studies: one gives the medazepam trial's groups as 30 and 32 (they were 42 and 20), one calls the post-COVID study randomized at 1.5 mg a day (neither is stated), one cites an unrelated bacteriology paper for "Russian randomized trials", and several call the licensed drops a spray. [34], [26], [24], [70], [86] Half-lives from 2–3 minutes to hours appear without a human measurement. [34], [28], [32]
Where do the website cycles come from?
The label gives a 14-day course and a 1–3-week gap before any repeat. Websites add 4 weeks on and 4 off, 2–4 weeks on with an equal break, 14 days on and 14 off, 1 month on and 1 month off, or 8 weeks on and 8 off, usually to prevent "tachyphylaxis" (tolerance). No tolerance study exists. [1], [28], [25], [87], [24], [35]
What are the registered studies planning?
Checked September 24, 2026: ClinicalTrials.gov and the World Health Organization's trial registry returned no Selank studies. The Russian clinical-trial permit register lists two 2004 permits for Selank with the protocol, phase and patient numbers left blank. [88], [89], [90]
Do nose drops, sprays and injections behave the same way?
Nobody knows, because Selank has never been measured in human blood in a published study, by any route. There is no human pharmacokinetics study, so there is no measured bioavailability, peak level or half-life for drops, sprays or injections. [8], [88]
The Russian label states that 92.8% of a nasal dose is absorbed, that Selank appears in the blood 30 seconds after dosing and that blood levels fall over 5–5.5 minutes. None of these figures cites a study, and we could not find one; they are label statements, not published measurements. [1], [37]
In rats, the intact peptide could be found in the blood for only 7–10 minutes, and its main active breakdown product was tuftsin. Radioactively labelled Selank reached brain tissue best when given through the nose, compared with injection into the abdomen, into a vein or by stomach tube. [91], [92], [93] In mice, nasal drops and injections into the abdomen both eased anxiety but changed different brain receptors. [71]
Is a home-made spray the same as the licensed drops?
Not necessarily. The licensed product is a 0.15% solution in water with a preservative (methylparaben), sold in a 3 mL dropper bottle; no spray form is registered. The label advises clearing a blocked nose first, because mucus can reduce absorption. [1], [36], [37]
A home-made or ready-made research spray has an unverified amount of peptide, an unknown pump volume and no stability data. Public accounts include a ready-made spray that "tastes like saline", a one-sided nasal reaction with a swollen lymph node and chills, and a sinus infection that one person blamed on an unfiltered home mix. [94], [95]
How long does Selank last in the body?
In people, its half-life is unknown. The label's "5–5.5 minutes" is unsourced, and in rats the intact peptide was gone from the blood within 7–10 minutes. [1], [91]
Website half-lives range from 2–3 minutes to 15–20 minutes, and one page claims half of an N-acetyl dose remains after 7 hours; none cites a human measurement. [34], [28], [32] How long an effect lasts is a different question from how long the peptide stays in the blood: in the phenazepam trial, the Selank group was still improving a week after the last dose. [17]
Is N-acetyl Selank amidate (NA-Selank) a stronger Selank?
It is a different molecule, with chemical caps on both ends, and we found no published study of it in people or animals. Pages give it doses of 200–600 mcg a day on the untested assumption that it lasts longer. [32], [26] Two public accounts describe strong, unpleasant mind-altering effects after N-acetyl Selank sprays, both with other substances in the background. [96], [97] In community education groups, educators disagree about whether the modified forms are stronger, and members are unsure whether differently labelled products contain the same molecule.
Is Selank acetate different from Selank?
It is the same peptide as an acetate salt, the form used in the licensed drops and in research papers. The FDA's compounding list names it as "Selank acetate (TP-7)". [36], [8]
Is there a Selank pill?
No. A developer review suggested that peptides of this family may survive digestion well enough to be taken by mouth, but no oral product exists and no study has tested oral Selank in people. [98]
How should Selank be stored, and how long does it last?
For the licensed drops, the answer comes from the label. For research powders and home-made sprays, no shelf life for human use has been established.
- Licensed drops (current 2025 label). Keep at 2–8 °C, away from light, and do not freeze; unopened shelf life is 2 years. Once opened, keep at up to 25 °C for no more than 15 days. Older versions said "not above 10 °C". [1], [36], [15]
- How long a bottle lasts. At the label dose of 12 drops a day (about 0.6 mL), a 3 mL bottle lasts about 5 days, so a 14-day course needs about three bottles; Russian reviewers report bottles lasting 3–8 days. [1], [15], [99], [100]
- Research powder. Websites say to keep the dry powder frozen at −20 °C for long storage; others say the fridge or even room temperature, and one gives 24 months frozen, 12 in the fridge and 6 at room temperature. None cites a stability test. [21], [25], [20], [33]
- Mixed vials and home-made sprays. Websites give anything from 14–21 days to about 30 days in the fridge without citing a Selank stability test. No study has measured how long a home mix keeps its strength, and the label's 15-day limit applies to drops that contain a preservative. [73], [23], [25], [22]

What do we actually know about Selank in people?
Less than its Russian approval suggests. The human studies are Russian, mostly from the network that developed Selank, and small. None of the studies in patients compared Selank with a placebo, the main trials were open-label or do not describe blinding, and none appears on ClinicalTrials.gov or the World Health Organization's trial registry; the only registration trace is two Russian trial permits from 2004 with the protocol details left blank. All the treatment studies gave Selank as nose drops. [88], [89], [90]

What did the anxiety trials find?
| Study | What researchers reported | What it cannot establish |
|---|---|---|
| Medazepam comparison, 2008 | 62 adults with generalized anxiety disorder or nervous exhaustion: 42 took Selank (2,700 mcg a day) and 20 took the tranquilizer medazepam for 14 days. Anxiety scores fell by similar amounts; Selank also eased tiredness. 17 of 42 improved suddenly and 25 gradually. Side effects were rare and brief: possibly caused by Selank in 3 of 42 patients, against side effects in 65% of the 20 on medazepam; no withdrawal after stopping. | How patients were assigned and whether anyone was blinded are not described. The PubMed summary lists the groups as 30 and 32, which is the split by diagnosis, not by treatment. [16] |
| Phenazepam comparison, 2014 | 60 adults with phobic or bodily anxiety, randomly assigned: 30 took Selank (2,700 mcg a day) and 30 took phenazepam (2 mg a day) for 14 days. At day 14, anxiety scores fell 26.3% with Selank and 55% with phenazepam (5 versus 7 responders). A week after both stopped, 17 on Selank were responders versus 9. | Open-label (everyone knew their treatment), two Moscow hospitals, one week of follow-up. [17] |
| Add-on study, 2015 | 70 adults: phenazepam plus Selank (40) versus phenazepam alone (30) for 14 days; 40% versus 23% responded, a difference that could be chance. Of 20 who then continued Selank alone for a week, 75% were responders at day 21, against 30% of those whose phenazepam was simply stopped. | Open-label; the continuation group was small and was not a separate randomized comparison. [18] |
| Fast and slow responders, 2012 | 20 people with generalized anxiety disorder: 8 improved within 3 days and 12 by day 14. | Conference abstract only; no comparison group. [101] |
| Older adults, 2010 | 15 people aged 54–76 who had not improved on a week of dummy drops: less anxiety and fatigue and better attention and memory tests after 14 days. | No comparison group. [52] |
In the phenazepam trials, "responders" were people whose anxiety score fell by at least half by day 14. The anxiety scores were the Hamilton anxiety scale and similar questionnaires, which measure symptoms, not how well someone functions day to day.

Selank versus phenazepam: during treatment and a week after stopping
Responders out of 30 per group. Selank 2,700 mcg a day as nose drops or phenazepam 2 mg a day, for 14 days.
- Day 14 (end of treatment)
- Responders: 5 of 30 on Selank, 7 of 30 on phenazepamAnxiety score fall: 26.3% with Selank, 55% with phenazepam
- Day 21 (7 days after both stopped)
- Responders: 17 of 30 on Selank, 9 of 30 on phenazepamStatistics: p = 0.037, as reported
Someone whose anxiety score fell by at least half. The score measures symptoms, not day-to-day functioning.
One open-label trial, 60 adults with anxiety disorders, Moscow.
Is Selank as strong as a benzodiazepine?
It depends on the trial. Against the benzodiazepine medazepam, anxiety relief was similar with fewer side effects. Against phenazepam, another benzodiazepine, Selank worked more slowly and less during treatment but held up better after stopping. [16], [17] Both trials were small and neither reports blinding, so neither settles the question. Doctors and users reviewing it online often call it mild, and in community education groups, some people with long-standing panic keep a prescribed medicine for attacks. [102], [103]
What other human reports exist?
These are smaller and weaker, and most are hosted on the manufacturer's website. Several share authors and possibly patients, and none used a placebo. [38]
- Added to an antidepressant, 2019. 35 people on escitalopram plus 1,800 mcg a day of Selank for 14 days versus 20 on escitalopram alone: anxiety symptoms fully resolved in 89% versus 15%. [53]
- Tiredness after COVID-19, 2024. 32 patients given drops 4 times a day for 30 days with other treatment, compared with 32 on the other treatment alone: better recovery of mental performance and less anxiety and low mood. How patients were assigned is not stated. [63]
- Eczema (atopic dermatitis), 2020. 65 patients randomly assigned to standard treatment with or without Selank for 14 days: by day 30, anxiety scores fell 2.4-fold with Selank versus 1.3–1.4-fold without. [75], [62]
- Asthma, 2019. 40 patients given Selank with asthma treatment versus 30 on asthma treatment alone: less anxiety. [61]
- Stress and adjustment, binge eating, headache, menopause, back pain and Parkinson's disease. Groups of about 15–32 people given 900–1,350 mcg a day for 14–21 days, reporting symptom improvements; some had an untreated comparison group and some had none. [104], [74], [66], [105], [106], [39]
Has Selank been tested in healthy people?
Only briefly. A brain-scan study of 52 healthy volunteers compared one dose of Selank, Semax or placebo (its summary says the dose was injected) and found a change in how the amygdala, a fear-processing area, connects with nearby areas 5–20 minutes later. It did not measure anxiety, focus or safety. [107] No study has tested whether Selank improves focus, memory or stress in healthy adults over days or weeks.
How might Selank work?
Nobody knows how Selank works in people. The explanations below come from rat and mouse studies and from cells and blood samples in a dish, almost all from the developers' network. Rodent doses (typically 100–3,000 mcg per kilogram) cannot be converted into human doses. [108], [109]

Does Selank act on GABA, the brain's calming system?
In laboratory tests, possibly. GABA is the brain's main calming messenger, and benzodiazepines work by strengthening its receptors. In binding tests, Selank made GABA stick to its receptor more strongly and interfered with diazepam's effect on the same receptor. [110] In rats, one nasal dose changed the activity of 29 of 77 nerve-signalling genes measured in the front of the brain within an hour; 25 of them also changed after a dose of GABA itself. [109]
The picture is not simple. In human nerve-like cells grown in a dish, Selank alone changed none of 84 genes tested, but it blunted GABA's effect and strengthened the antipsychotic olanzapine's. [111] In slices of rat brain, it increased the calming (inhibitory) signals nerve cells receive. [112], [113]
Does it slow the breakdown of enkephalins?
In blood samples, yes. Enkephalins are the body's own short, opioid-like peptides involved in pain and stress. In human blood serum in a dish, Selank blocked the enzymes that break them down, at laboratory concentrations. [114], [115] People with generalized anxiety broke enkephalins down faster than healthy people, and in the medazepam trial this breakdown slowed with Selank. [115], [16] In mice, the opioid blocker naloxone changed Selank's effects, which fits this idea without proving it. [116], [117]
Does it affect serotonin, dopamine or BDNF?
In rodents, it shifted serotonin, noradrenaline and dopamine chemistry in ways that differed between mouse strains. Rat studies also report changes in BDNF, a growth-support protein for nerve cells, in the hippocampus. None of this has been measured in people. [118], [119], [120], [121]
Is Selank an immune peptide?
It is built from one, and animal and cell studies suggest immune effects: changed inflammation genes in mouse spleen, calmer inflammatory signals in stressed rats, and less flu virus in cells and in mice dosed beforehand. In blood cells from patients with depression, it switched off the gene for the inflammatory signal IL-6 in a dish, although the amount of IL-6 in the same cultures rose. No study has shown fewer infections or any other immune benefit in people. [57], [58], [59], [60]
Does it affect blood clotting or blood pressure?
In rats and in laboratory tests, Selank thinned the blood slightly (an anticoagulant effect), increased clot-dissolving activity and reduced platelet clumping. [122], [123], [124] Given into a vein in anaesthetized cats, it lowered blood pressure by about a third for 1–3 minutes. [125] There are no human data on bleeding or blood pressure; the clotting findings are a theoretical reason for caution with blood thinners or before surgery.
Does Selank lower cortisol?
We found no human study that measured cortisol or other stress hormones with Selank, so claims that it "lowers cortisol" have no human evidence behind them. Some courses in community education groups make this claim without a source.
What are the risks and unanswered questions?
Is Selank safe?
Nobody has shown that it is safe beyond short courses of the licensed drops. In trials lasting 14–30 days, Selank caused few and mild problems, mainly a dry nose and occasional memory or concentration complaints, but most studies were small and did not describe in detail how they checked for side effects. There are no long-term, pregnancy or injection safety data, and the animal safety testing is known only from a developer summary and a patent statement, not published studies. The FDA says it lacks important information about the safety of Selank acetate in people. [16], [17], [38], [6], [8]
What side effects have been reported?
| Problem | What was reported | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Nose and taste | The phenazepam trial's authors called a dry nose the most pronounced Selank effect, and their table also lists memory complaints (10%) and longer sleep (13%) at day 14; the label lists an unpleasant taste when drops run into the throat. One ready-made spray caused one-sided nasal irritation, a swollen lymph node and chills | Trial, label, public account [17], [1], [95] |
| Allergy | Allergic reactions, including delayed ones, with frequency unknown; the preservative methylparaben can cause allergy | Label [1] |
| Drowsiness | Sleepiness by lunchtime; eyes closing while driving; feeling "too chill" at 1 mg | Russian reviews, public account [99], [126], [127] |
| Irritability or more anxiety | Irritability in the first days; tension, anxiety and a sleepless night after a bedtime dose; anxiety rising to panic on day 5 in someone also taking other medicines | Public accounts [128], [129], [48], [130] |
| Blood pressure and flushing | A rise in blood pressure with shaking 20–30 minutes after a dose of the licensed drops (2 reviews); a burning, flushed face; a feeling of high blood pressure for 12–18 hours; mild hot flashes at 500 mcg by injection | Russian reviews, public accounts [131], [132], [51], [42], [64] |
| Mood and dreams | Tearfulness, low mood, nightmares and a nervous tic; brain fog and loss of pleasure after 1–2 weeks of benefit | Russian review, public account [50], [133] |
| Other single reports | Ringing in the ears, headache, increased hunger | Public accounts [134], [76], [135], [136] |
Personal accounts cannot show cause, and many involve Semax or other substances. They show what has been noticed, not how often it happens.
Can Selank make anxiety worse?
In some people, it appears to. Public accounts describe more anxiety, tension or panic soon after starting, including one person who took the licensed drops and one whose anxiety returned when the injections were restarted. [48], [130], [137], [79] In community education groups, a small number of people describe the same, usually settling within about a week of stopping; educators there suggest first checking whether another anxiety medicine was recently stopped, because rebound from that can look like a Selank reaction.
Does Selank make you sleepy? Can you drive after taking it?
The trials found no benzodiazepine-like sedation, and attention and word tests did not worsen, although a few Selank patients reported memory or concentration complaints; the label says Selank does not affect driving. [17], [1] Some users disagree: one Russian reviewer described her eyes closing at the wheel, and in community education groups, drowsiness, yawning and next-morning grogginess come up at doses above about 500 mcg. [126]
Is Selank addictive? Does it cause tolerance?
This has not been properly studied. The label says Selank does not cause dependence, and the trials saw no withdrawal after 14 days, but no study was designed to test dependence or misuse, and a US pharmacology review calls Selank poorly studied and urges testing of GABA-acting drugs for misuse potential before they reach the public. [1], [16], [29]
Tolerance has never been tested in people. In rats, a daily 4-week course kept working, and a developer summary reports no tolerance in animals up to 30 days. [138], [38] Some users describe the effect fading after two weeks to a month of daily use; others describe steady effects. [139], [140], [43]
Does Selank cause hair loss?
No study has looked. Two people online describe hair loss, one during 8 months of mostly daily Selank and one after stopping a long course of Semax and Selank, while another long-term user reports none. None of these accounts can show cause, and the claim that it happens through BDNF is speculation. [141], [142], [103]
Could product quality change the risk?
Yes. The licensed drops are made under Russian drug rules; research powders and sprays are not. The FDA flags a risk of immune reactions from clumping (aggregation) and peptide impurities in compounded Selank, and Belgian control laboratories identified Selank among seized products of the kind sold online as powders and nasal sprays. [8], [31] Buyers online have reported a blue powder sold as Selank, a ready-made spray that tasted like salt water, and a seller that tests purity but not sterility. [143], [94], [95]
Is Selank legal? Is it FDA-approved?
Checked September 24, 2026. Rules differ by country and change quickly. A "research use only" label does not make a product legal to sell or safe to use.
United States. Selank is not an FDA-approved medicine. The key points:
- Compounding. US pharmacies may compound with a bulk ingredient only if it has an official monograph, is part of an approved drug, or appears on the FDA's list of bulk substances allowed for compounding. Selank is on no approved list and in no approved drug. [144], [145]
- Safety listing. The FDA's list of compounding ingredients that may pose significant safety risks names "Selank acetate (TP-7)" as nominated but withdrawn, warning of possible immune reactions and a lack of human safety information. [8]
- In practice. US telehealth and compounding pages still advertise compounded Selank sprays, and some US clinics prescribe it. [70], [19], [146] A widely shared 2024 claim that the FDA "banned" Selank misread the safety listing. [147]
- No other federal action. No Federal Register notice or federal regulation names Selank. [148], [149]
Canada. No Selank product is authorized. Health Canada named seized unauthorized injectable Selank in advisories about a Calgary clinic (April 1, 2025) and an online seller (August 1, 2025). [9], [150], [151]
Australia. Selank is not on the Australian Register of Therapeutic Goods and is not named in the June 2026 Poisons Standard. The medicines regulator warned in May 2026 that poorly labelled imported peptides are being seized. A missing name does not make it legal to sell or import. [10], [152], [153]
United Kingdom and Europe. There is no UK-licensed Selank product and no product authorized through the European Medicines Agency; national approvals in individual EU countries were not checked. [11], [12]
Russia and Ukraine. In Russia, the 0.15% drops are a registered medicine sold without a prescription since 2017. A Ukrainian registration, where it was prescription-only, expired on August 30, 2016, so pages calling it approved in Ukraine are out of date. [5], [2], [154], [155]
Is Selank banned in sport? Does it show up on a drug test?
It is not named on the World Anti-Doping Agency's 2026 or 2027 lists. Their S0 rule bans substances with no current approval by any government health authority; because Selank is approved in Russia, it is unclear whether S0 covers it, and Polish anti-doping scientists list its status as unclear. [156], [157], [158] The US drug-reference service used by athletes has no entry for it, and the US anti-doping agency advises athletes to avoid anything sold as a research chemical. [159], [160] We found no published test for Selank in urine or blood, although laboratories can identify it in products. [31]
Who should be especially cautious?
The label rules out the first three groups. The others are cautions from studies or have simply not been studied, which is a reason for caution, not proof of harm.
- Children and teenagers. Ruled out under 18; no study has included them. [1] One public account describes heavy nasal use of Selank with two other peptides between the ages of 12 and 14, with emotional numbness at the time, and in community education groups some parents describe giving it to teenagers. [161]
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding. Ruled out; not studied. [1]
- Allergy to the ingredients, including the preservative methylparaben. [1]
- Anyone taking antidepressants, benzodiazepines, sleeping pills, stimulants or mood stabilisers. Interactions are largely untested, and changes to these medicines belong with the prescriber. [1], [18], [53]
- Bipolar disorder, psychosis, post-traumatic stress or a history of seizures. Not studied. In community education groups, people with these conditions use Selank without any data to guide them.
- Blood thinners or upcoming surgery, because of the animal clotting findings. [122], [124]
- Drug-tested athletes, because of the S0 rule. [156]
Can Selank be taken with antidepressants, benzodiazepines or alcohol?
Not in a formal interaction study. The label says no interaction has been found with the antipsychotic haloperidol, two barbiturate sedatives, stimulant-type drugs or alcohol, without describing how this was tested. [1] In people, Selank has been given alongside phenazepam in an open trial and alongside escitalopram in a manufacturer-hosted report. [18], [53] In mice it strengthened diazepam's anti-anxiety effect and reduced its sedation, and in human cells it strengthened olanzapine's effect on genes. [162], [111] One person described a racing heart after a cannabis (delta-8) gummy while taking Selank. [163]
Nothing is known about Selank with Semax, its usual partner, over the long term, or with ADHD medicines. Bring a complete list of everything you take to a pharmacist or doctor.
What should be monitored while using Selank?
The Russian label sets no blood tests or check-ups. What exists is a record of what the studies measured, which can help you prepare questions for a clinician; it is not a personal testing plan.
What does the label ask for?
No routine tests. The label lists who should not use Selank and warns about allergic reactions to the drops or their preservative; the label also advises clearing a blocked nose before dosing. [1], [36], [37]
What did the human studies check?
- Symptoms. Anxiety and mood questionnaires (such as the Hamilton anxiety scale and a patient self-rating scale), a doctor's overall rating, a side-effect checklist and quality-of-life scores. [16], [17]
- Thinking. Attention and word-finding tests, which showed no impairment with Selank. [17]
- Body checks. The medazepam trial took blood counts, a urine test and a heart tracing (ECG) at the start and end, without reporting the results. [16]
- Research measures. Enkephalin breakdown in blood, blood immune signals, brain waves (EEG) and brain scans. [16], [60], [52], [107]
Which signals matter, and why?
A severe allergic reaction needs urgent medical care rather than tracking [1], and so do thoughts of self-harm or a panic attack that does not settle.
| Why it matters | What studies, labels or reports flagged | Tracking category |
|---|---|---|
| Anxiety | Relief builds over days to two weeks in trials; some people get more anxious, or find anxiety returns on breaks [16], [78] | Anxiety; Stress Tolerance |
| Sleep | Used for sleep but can keep some people awake, with nightmares in some reports [48], [50] | Sleep Quality |
| Daytime drowsiness | Reported despite the label's driving statement [126] | Energy Levels; Side Effect Burden |
| Mood and irritability | Irritability in the first days; tearfulness or flat mood in some accounts [128], [50], [133] | Mood & Wellbeing; Emotional Regulation; Emotional Aliveness |
| Blood pressure and flushing | A few reports after doses of the licensed drops [131], [51] | Blood Pressure; Temperature Regulation |
| Changes to other medicines | Any change to a prescribed medicine, made with the prescriber, can cause its own symptoms that are easy to blame on Selank; educators in community education groups raise this | Withdrawal Symptoms |
| Nose | Dryness in trials; irritation with sprays [17], [95] | Side Effect Burden |
These come from small studies and personal accounts, so they show what has been flagged, not what a person will experience.
What do people in public communities report?
Russian review sites, English-language forums and community education groups contain grateful reports, flat disappointments and a steady trickle of drowsiness, irritability and sleep complaints, often in the same thread. Russian reviewers mostly used the licensed drops, often on a doctor's or pharmacist's suggestion; English-speaking users mostly use research sprays or injections, and most take other things too. These are selected discussions, not a survey of everyone who has tried Selank.
On the largest Russian review site, 39 reviews of the licensed drops average 3.6 out of 5, with 61% recommending them. The site warns that commissioned advertising reviews were found on the page, and one reviewer says a manufacturer representative asked her to remove a negative review. [164], [50]
What do the positive reports look like?
The typical success story is a quieter mind rather than a lift: less rumination and reactivity, calm without feeling sedated. One person on a daily 250 mcg injection, whose antidepressant had stopped working, said they no longer felt panicky by the third week; another described steadier mood on 200 mcg sprays five or six days a week. [146], [72] Russian reviewers describe calmer responses to stress and better sleep during a course. [165], [164] In community education groups, several people say they noticed the effect mainly when they stopped.
How fast does it work, and how long does it last?
Reports range from minutes to a week. Russian reviewers of the licensed drops describe feeling calmer within about 10 minutes, one after placing the drops on the nasal septum with the nostril pinched, while others noticed a change only on the second to fifth day. [166], [167], [164], [168], [169] One injection user feels calmer within about 30 minutes, and a spray user noticed less anxiety after about a week. [103], [170] In community education groups, nasal doses are described as faster and shorter-lasting than injections, and a single morning injection as wearing off by mid-afternoon for some.
Does everyone notice something?
No, and "nothing happened" is one of the most common stories. One person used a full bottle of ready-made spray at a stated 600 mcg a day with no effect; another injected 500 mcg with Semax for a week and felt nothing; Russian reviewers call it as weak as valerian or say it did nothing at all, and doctors reviewing it online call the effect "very average". [171], [172], [173], [174], [102] The explanations offered (too little per spray, a poor batch, the wrong route) are untested. In community education groups, nonresponders appear on both routes, and some ready-made sprays turned out to hold only 25–50 mcg a spray.
What unwanted effects come up?
The recurring complaints are drowsiness, early irritability, lying awake after an evening dose and, less often, anxiety that rises instead of falling. Single reports include flushing, a rise in blood pressure, nightmares, ringing in the ears and hunger; the risks section lists them with sources. [51], [129], [48], [134] In community education groups, vivid dreams and next-morning grogginess cluster at bedtime injections of about 500 mcg to 1 mg, and feeling unmotivated or flat at the highest doses.
Does it stop working over time?
Some say it does. One person on the licensed drops felt it losing effect after a month of daily use and switched to one week on, one week off; another found it stopped working after about two weeks. [139], [140] One Russian reviewer felt well for two weeks after a first course, but a second course did not help and brought irritability. [77] Others describe steady effects over months. [43] No study has tested tolerance.
How can you judge a Selank story?
Ask: Was it the licensed drops, a home-made spray, an injection, or N-acetyl Selank amidate sold under a similar name? How many micrograms, rather than "sprays" or "units"? What else changed: Semax, a new or stopped antidepressant, sleep aids, alcohol, a stressful month ending? Was anything measured, or only felt? Did the person post again weeks later? Anxiety naturally rises and falls, so one calm week proves little.
How does Selank compare with Semax, DSIP and N-acetyl Selank amidate?
These are the peptides most often bought alongside Selank or confused with it. Of the four, Selank, Semax and DSIP are registered as nose drops in Russia; none is approved in the United States.
| Peptide | What it is | How it is taken | Human evidence | Approval status |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Selank (this guide) | Seven amino acids: tuftsin plus Pro-Gly-Pro [3] | 0.15% nose drops, 2 drops in each nostril 3 times a day for 14 days (label) [1] | Small Russian anxiety trials against tranquilizers, with no placebo [16], [17] | Non-prescription medicine in Russia; not FDA-approved [2], [8] |
| Semax | Seven amino acids from a fragment of ACTH, a stress hormone; shares Selank's Pro-Gly-Pro end [175] | 0.1% nose drops, 2–3 drops in each nostril 2–4 times a day for 3–14 days, depending on the use (label) [176] | Small Russian stroke and brain-circulation studies, mostly not randomized [175] | Prescription medicine in Russia; FDA advisers voted 8–5 (1 abstaining) in July 2026 to recommend allowing compounding, which is not an FDA decision [177] |
| DSIP | Nine amino acids, first found in 1977 in rabbits during induced sleep [178] | Sleep studies gave it into a vein; Russian nose drops hold 300 mcg per ampoule [179], [180] | Small 1980s sleep studies; controlled results weak [179], [181] | Nose drops registered in Russia; not FDA-approved; advisers voted 6 yes, 7 no, 1 abstaining on compounding [180], [182] |
| N-acetyl Selank amidate | Selank with chemical caps on both ends [32] | Research sprays and injections; no tested human dose [32] | None found | No approval found |
The real differences are in what has been tested. Selank has small trials in anxiety, Semax in stroke and brain circulation, DSIP in sleep, and the N-acetyl form in nothing. The only direct comparison is the brain-scan study of 52 healthy people given Selank, Semax or placebo, which did not test symptoms or safety, so the table cannot say which works better or is safer. [107]
Selank and Semax come from the same Moscow institute and manufacturer and are often combined: Semax in the morning for focus and Selank later for calm, or both in one vial or spray. The FDA's Semax review found US websites selling combined products, including a 50:50 injectable. Stack pages usually give Selank 250–500 mcg alongside Semax. The combination has never been studied, and in a mixed product the amount of each per dose depends on how it was made. [175], [183], [184] In community education groups, a common suggestion is to start the two separately, so each effect can be told apart.
Common questions about Selank
How long does Selank take to work?
In the trials, some patients improved within the first days and the rest over two weeks. [16] Personal accounts range from minutes after a nasal dose, or about half an hour after an injection, to a week or more, and many people notice nothing. [167], [103], [171] The phenazepam trial found Selank still improving a week after the course ended. [17] See what people report.
Is Selank a benzodiazepine? Does it work like Xanax?
No. Selank is a peptide, not a benzodiazepine, although laboratory tests suggest it acts on the same calming receptor system (GABA). In trials it matched the benzodiazepine medazepam but worked more slowly and less strongly than phenazepam during treatment; it has never been compared with alprazolam (Xanax). [110], [16], [17] See how it might work.
Can Selank replace an antidepressant or a benzodiazepine?
There is no evidence that it can. Selank has been studied alongside or against these medicines for two weeks, never as a replacement; one open study kept people on Selank for a week after phenazepam was stopped, which is not a test of switching. Stopping some of these medicines suddenly can cause serious withdrawal effects. One public account describes panic attacks after coming off an antidepressant with Selank. Any change to a prescribed medicine belongs with the prescriber. [18], [29], [30] See who should be cautious.
Is Selank the same as Semax? What is the Semax and Selank stack?
No. Semax is a different seven-amino-acid peptide from the same Russian developers, built from a stress-hormone fragment and sold as prescription drops for stroke and memory problems; the two share only their last three amino acids. The "stack" usually means Semax in the morning and Selank later, or both in one spray or vial, and the combination has not been studied. [175], [176] See how they compare and the Semax guide.
Does Selank help with sleep?
No study has tested it as a sleep treatment; the trials tracked sleep only as one anxiety symptom. The label counts sleep problems among the anxiety symptoms it is meant for, and some people fall asleep more easily when racing thoughts are the problem, while others lie awake or have nightmares after an evening dose. [1], [47], [48] See morning or bedtime.
Is Selank legal to buy? Is it approved in Russia?
In Russia, the 0.15% drops are a registered medicine sold without a prescription. In the US, Selank is not FDA-approved and not on the list of ingredients pharmacies may compound, and we found no approval in Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom or the European Union. The Russian approval covers the licensed drops, not research powders, and a "research use only" label does not make a product legal to sell. [5], [8], [9] See the dated legal-status summary.
Can you take Selank every day, long term?
Long-term daily use has not been studied. The label course is 14 days, repeated after a 1–3-week gap when needed, and the longest study course was 30 days. Month-long cycles and year-long weekday use online are conventions, not tested plans. [1], [63], [24] See where protocols differ.
Glossary
Plain explanations of the route, dosing, brain and research terms used in this guide. Underlined terms in the text link here.
- Adverse event
- A harmful or unwanted medical event reported after someone used a treatment. A report alone does not prove the treatment caused it.
- Aggregation
- Peptide molecules clumping together. Clumps can make a product weaker and, when injected, more likely to trigger an immune reaction.
- Amino acid
- A small chemical building block. Chains of amino acids make up peptides and proteins.
- Animal study
- Research in animals such as rats or mice. It shows what a substance does in a living body, but results in people can differ.
- BDNF
- Brain-derived neurotrophic factor, a protein that helps nerve cells survive, grow and form connections.
- Benzodiazepine
- A class of prescription tranquilizers, such as diazepam, alprazolam and phenazepam, that strengthen the brain's GABA calming system. They can cause sedation and dependence, and stopping them suddenly can be dangerous.
- Bioavailability
- How much of a dose reaches the bloodstream in a usable form. It depends heavily on the route.
- Cell study (in vitro)
- Research on cells or blood samples in a dish. It gives early clues about biology, but it is far from proof of benefit in people.
- Compounding
- When a pharmacy prepares a customized medicine from individual ingredients. In the US, federal rules control which bulk ingredients pharmacies may use.
- Controlled trial
- A study that compares people who receive a treatment with a similar group who do not, or who receive a different treatment or a placebo. Randomly assigning people to each group makes the comparison fairer.
- Course and cycle
- A course is the period of repeated use, such as 14 days. A cycle is a course plus a planned break before any further use.
- Daily total
- All the amounts given in one day, added together. For example, 300 mcg three times a day is a 900 mcg daily total.
- Dose (amount each time)
- The amount given on one occasion. A protocol lists both the dose and how often it is given.
- ECG
- Electrocardiogram, a recording of the heart's electrical activity taken with pads on the skin.
- EEG
- Electroencephalogram, a recording of the brain's electrical activity (brain waves) taken with sensors on the scalp.
- Enkephalins
- Short peptides the body makes that act on opioid receptors and help dampen pain and stress. Enzymes in the blood and brain break them down within minutes.
- GABA
- Gamma-aminobutyric acid, the brain's main calming (inhibitory) messenger. Benzodiazepines work by strengthening its receptors.
- Half-life
- The time it takes for the measured level of a substance in the blood to fall by half. It is not the same as how long an effect lasts.
- Intranasal
- Given into the nose, as drops or a spray, to be absorbed through its lining. The licensed Selank drops are intranasal.
- Investigational
- Still being studied and not approved by a regulator, such as the FDA, to treat any condition.
- Freeze-dried (lyophilized)
- Dried by freezing and removing the water, leaving a powder. Research Selank is sold this way and mixed with liquid before use.
- mcg and mg
- Micrograms and milligrams. 1 mg equals 1,000 mcg. A drop of the licensed 0.15% Selank holds about 75 mcg.
- Neurasthenia
- A diagnosis still used in Russia for long-lasting nervous exhaustion: tiredness, irritability, poor concentration and poor sleep, often with anxiety.
- Open-label
- A study in which patients and researchers know who receives which treatment. Expectations can then affect the results, especially for symptoms like anxiety.
- Peptide
- A short chain of amino acids. Selank is a chain of seven.
- Pharmacokinetics
- How the body absorbs, moves, breaks down and removes a substance.
- Placebo
- A dummy treatment with no active ingredient, used as a comparison in studies.
- Preclinical research
- Studies done before research in people: cell studies and animal studies.
- Reconstitution
- Mixing a freeze-dried powder with a liquid so it can be measured. The amount of peptide in the vial and the volume of liquid added together set how much each unit or spray holds.
- Registered medicine
- A medicine a country's regulator has approved for sale for specific uses, with an official label. Selank is registered in Russia, not in the United States or the European Union.
- Research use only
- A label on products sold for laboratory research. It does not mean a product is approved, tested for human use or legal to sell as a medicine.
- Responder
- In a trial, a person whose symptom score improved by at least a set amount. In the Selank phenazepam trials, the anxiety score had to fall by at least half.
- Subcutaneous (SC)
- Injected into the fatty layer just under the skin. Many online Selank users inject this way, although no human study has tested it.
- Syringe units
- Markings on an insulin syringe that measure volume. On a U-100 syringe, 100 units equal 1 mL. The amount of drug per unit depends on the vial's concentration.
- Titration
- Adjusting a dose in steps, usually starting lower and increasing if needed.
- Tuftsin
- A natural four-amino-acid peptide (Thr-Lys-Pro-Arg) that acts on immune cells. Selank is tuftsin with three amino acids added, and the body breaks Selank back down to tuftsin.
- WADA
- The World Anti-Doping Agency, which publishes the list of substances banned in sport.
- Withdrawal and rebound
- Withdrawal effects are symptoms caused by stopping a substance. A rebound is a problem returning worse than before after stopping. Neither has been properly studied for Selank; follow-up after stopping lasted about two weeks at most.

Across this guide, the citations include 60 original scientific papers: 18 human studies and 42 cell and animal studies. The optional library below summarizes selected animal and cell papers by question. Paper counts are not counts of independent research teams: most Selank papers come from one Moscow research network.
In the route details, intraperitoneal means into the abdominal cavity and intravenous means into a vein.
Anxiety and behaviour in animals · 7 papers
- Only anxious mice respond. In a high-anxiety mouse strain, Selank prevented anxious behaviour across 200–3,000 mcg/kg into the abdomen, without the slowing seen with benzodiazepines; a calm strain showed no effect. [108]
- Enkephalins in mouse blood. At 100 mcg/kg, Selank eased anxiety and slowed the breakdown of an enkephalin in the blood of anxious mice only. [185]
- Four weeks of daily dosing. In rats, a daily course reduced anxious and fearful behaviour from day 2, with the effect lasting through four weeks and no change in weight. [138]
- Depression-like behaviour. Results depended on the dose: low single doses were active in mice, while repeated or higher doses were not; in a rat strain prone to depression, high repeated doses helped. [186]
- Monkeys. In monkeys with experimentally induced "neurosis", nasal Selank reduced fear and aggression and improved memory for a long time. [187]
- The opioid link. Naloxone, an opioid blocker, weakened Selank's anti-anxiety effect in one mouse strain and strengthened it in another. [116]
- With diazepam under stress. Under chronic unpredictable stress in rats, Selank plus diazepam returned anxiety measures to their pre-stress levels. [188]
Learning, memory and withdrawal models · 8 papers
- Slow learners. Selank improved learning in rats with low learning ability from the first dose, with the effect growing over four days. [189]
- Memory that lasts. One injection during memory formation kept the learned response stable for 30 days in rats and briefly raised serotonin turnover. [190]
- Damaged brain chemistry. Selank restored learning in rats with early damage to their dopamine and noradrenaline systems, and prevented memory loss caused by the drug actinomycin D. [191], [192]
- Alcohol withdrawal. One dose removed withdrawal-related anxiety and pain sensitivity in rats without changing how much alcohol they drank. [54]
- Alcohol sensitization. Like naloxone, Selank blocked the growing hyperactivity that repeated alcohol causes in mice. [193]
- Morphine withdrawal. In rats, Selank reduced an overall morphine-withdrawal score by 39.6%, against 49.3% for diazepam. [55]
- With tranquilizers. In anxious mice, adding Selank to diazepam or a similar drug increased the anti-anxiety effect and prevented the drop in movement the tranquilizers caused. [162]
Genes, immunity, gut, liver and safety tests · 7 papers
- Brain genes. One nasal dose changed 36 genes in the rat hippocampus more than twofold, and a course changed 20, mostly genes for membrane proteins. [194]
- Stomach. Selank and its breakdown products reduced the area of experimental stomach ulcers in rats. [195]
- Liver under stress. In stressed rats, Selank lowered blood liver enzymes and changed the liver's antioxidant enzymes. [196]
- Embryonic stem cells. In mouse embryonic stem cells, Selank barely changed growth or survival, but at the highest concentration 61% fewer GABA-making nerve cells formed. [197]
- Blood pressure and brain blood flow. In anaesthetized cats, Selank into a vein lowered blood pressure by 32% for 1–3 minutes and raised brain blood flow by 24%. The paper prints the dose as 300 mg/kg, probably meaning mcg/kg. [125]
- Where it goes and what it becomes. In rats, Selank was broken down in blood into shorter pieces (TKPRP, TKP and two-amino-acid fragments), and the intact peptide spread to the liver, kidneys and heart. [93], [91]
How this guide was researched
This guide is built from a thorough review of the sources cited throughout it: published scientific studies, official Russian product labels, regulatory documents and published protocol descriptions. We also reviewed public online forums, Russian review sites and community education groups where people describe their own experiences with Selank.
The guide cites 197 sources, including 60 original scientific papers. Each type of source answers a different question. Studies show what researchers measured. Labels show how the licensed product is meant to be used. Protocol descriptions show how Selank is typically used online. Personal accounts show what individual people experienced. Every numbered citation links to its entry below, labeled by source type.
How this guide was made
Research and drafting were AI-assisted. Every cited source was checked against the original, and the guide was reviewed and edited by Doserly before publication. It has not had an independent clinical review, and Doserly does not currently have medical reviewers. Doserly makes a medication and health-tracking app and runs Doserly Academy, both of which are promoted in this guide. Read our editorial policy for how guides are researched, updated and corrected.
This guide is for educational purposes. It summarizes what the reviewed sources report so the research is easier to understand; it is not medical advice. For a deeper dive, or to check any point for yourself, go straight to the cited sources.

Updates and corrections
Updated September 26, 2026. This is the first version of the guide in its new format. It replaces an earlier, shorter reference page with a full review of the Russian labels, the human trials, regulatory status, dosing sources and community experience, and adds sections on storage, what happens when people stop, what to monitor and how Selank compares with related peptides. Verified points from the earlier page were carried over. Corrections: the medazepam trial gave Selank to 42 patients and medazepam to 20 (the 30 and 32 in its summary are the diagnosis groups), and the anxiety trials used 2,700 mcg a day for 14 days, which the earlier page could not state. The phenazepam comparison is now described in full: phenazepam worked more strongly during treatment, and Selank had more responders a week after stopping. The earlier page said the label's drops could not be converted into micrograms; the original 2009 instruction gives 75 mcg per drop, so the label dose is about 900 mcg a day. Descriptions of Selank as working without sedation or dependence were narrowed, because dependence was never formally studied and some users report drowsiness. The date describes this revision, not a fresh check of every source.
