What is L-Citrulline?

L-citrulline is a non-protein amino acid that can increase arginine availability. Citrulline malate is a mixture; its total grams do not equal grams of L-citrulline. The WHO indispensable-amino-acid table does not set an adult dietary requirement for this ingredient; no supplement target follows. [1]

Should L-Citrulline be cycled?

No verified trial establishes a cycle. A review point can limit indefinite use, but it does not prove a physiological reset.

What happens when it is stopped?

No withdrawal syndrome is established. An acute or short study cannot predict persistence after stopping.

Which foods provide it?

Do not count citrulline as one of the indispensable amino acids supplied by dietary protein. The studies here tested a concentrated ingredient or a citrulline-malate mixture, not a serving of ordinary protein food. Dietary protein requirements do not establish a citrulline supplement target. [1]–[3]

Which forms and label details matter?

Record pure L-citrulline grams separately from citrulline-malate blend grams and ratio. Product analyses can differ from marketing ratios, so do not convert an 8 g blend into an assumed citrulline amount.

How should it be stored?

Follow the finished-product label, close the container and protect it from moisture and heat. Keep the lot number and discard a product with a broken seal or unexplained change.

What is L-Citrulline commonly used for?

Citrulline is marketed for blood flow, endurance, repetitions and soreness. Positive cycling evidence and null resistance evidence used different forms, schedules, populations and outcomes.

What does human research show?

Suzuki found a 1.5% faster 4 km cycling time after the exact pure-citrulline schedule in 22 trained men. [2] Chappell found that one 8 g citrulline-malate blend did not improve repetitions or force and produced more soreness than placebo over 72 hours. [3] Formulation identity and exercise model prevent one result from canceling or proving the other.

An acute study, biomarker, tolerance study and clinical outcome answer different questions.

How might it act?

Citrulline is a non-protein amino acid, not an indispensable building block incorporated into proteins. It can increase arginine availability; arginine is a substrate for nitric-oxide synthesis. In the cycling trial, higher plasma arginine accompanied a small performance difference, while plasma nitrite/nitrate did not differ significantly. A proposed pathway therefore should not be presented as a proven explanation for every exercise outcome. [2]

What are the risks and interactions?

GI discomfort can occur, and vasodilatory pathways may overlap with blood-pressure or erectile-dysfunction medicines. Review use with nitrates, PDE5 inhibitors, antihypertensives, kidney disease, pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Which medicines can interact?

Product-specific interaction data are limited. Have the complete formula reviewed by a pharmacist when taking medicines, especially for neurologic, psychiatric, metabolic, kidney or liver conditions. Do not invent a universal separation interval.

Regulatory status: In the United States, supplements are not routinely approved for efficacy before sale. In Canada, check the NPN or DIN-HM and licensed label conditions. [4], [5]

What should be monitored?

Record product, lot, form, amount per administration, frequency, daily total, co-ingredients, dietary context, symptoms and intended outcome. Set a review date before starting.

Stop and seek advice for an allergic reaction, persistent vomiting, unusual weakness, confusion or another severe symptom.

What do public communities report?

Public discussions often emphasize taste, timing and felt effects while omitting lot, total diet and validated outcomes. This update did not independently recrawl or quantify those posts.

Common questions about L-Citrulline

Is citrulline malate the same as pure L-citrulline?

No. It is a mixture, and total blend grams do not reveal the citrulline amount without verified composition.

Did 2.4 g/day improve cycling?

In 22 trained men, seven daily doses plus one pre-test dose improved a 4 km time trial by 1.5%; that is a narrow event-specific result.

Did 8 g improve resistance training?

No. One 8 g malate blend did not improve repetitions or force and produced more soreness than placebo.

Can I convert an 8 g 1.11:1 blend into pure citrulline?

Do not infer it without verified product analysis; marketed and measured ratios can differ.

Can it overlap with blood-pressure or ED medicines?

Yes, vasodilatory effects may add. Review nitrates, PDE5 inhibitors and antihypertensives with a clinician or pharmacist.

What should I track?

Record pure versus malate form, verified ratio, each administration, exercise type, event duration, blood pressure, GI effects and review date.
