Vinpocetine: The Definitive Guide

Vinpocetine is a synthetic compound, not a plant constituent. Old dementia signals, current safety warnings and product identity must remain separate.

The evidence separates old dementia trials, a null modern cognition pilot, pregnancy risk and variable product content.

What is vinpocetine?

Vinpocetine is a synthetic compound related to vincamine, an alkaloid in lesser periwinkle. FDA states that vinpocetine itself is not a constituent of plants. It is marketed for memory, focus and blood flow, but FDA has not evaluated it as effective for those uses. [1]

Human evidence depends on the question. Dementia studies are old and inconclusive; a small 2021 cognition study was null. Acute-stroke research belongs to supervised hospital treatment and cannot define a consumer supplement routine. [2], [4], [7]

Typical Vinpocetine Protocols

Source-specific exposures, not personal recommendations. Frequency is preserved exactly where methods report it. [2]–[4], [6]

Health Canada NPN 80095788 · adultsProduct-specific 10 mg tablet10–30 mg totalOnce dailyLabel-directedLicensed product purpose includes memory and cognition
This is one product record with specific warnings, not a universal clinical protocol.

There is no RDA, AI or established UL. The 30- and 60-mg daily totals in older trials came from three administrations, not one.

Titration
No evidence-based self-titration schedule is established.
Timing
Older dementia research used three administrations daily; a Canadian product record uses once daily. These sources are not interchangeable.
Duration
The main dementia trials predate modern diagnostic and reporting standards. Long-term consumer safety remains uncertain.
Stopping
The Canadian product record says to stop at least two weeks before surgery; the surgical team should set the plan. [6]

What is vinpocetine commonly used for?

Marketing includes memory, focus, dementia, stroke recovery, energy and vision. The evidence does not support one broad conclusion. Cochrane judged dementia evidence inconclusive, and the small 2021 study found no significant cognitive benefit in healthy volunteers or people with epilepsy. [2], [4]

The 2022 acute-stroke review reported disability signals but called for adequate double-blind trials before routine administration. Acute stroke requires emergency care; this evidence is not a rationale for self-treatment. [7]

Which form and label details matter?

Record vinpocetine milligrams per tablet and per recommended daily serving, number of administrations, lot, other cognition or blood-flow ingredients, and an independent assay if available. Do not count “lesser periwinkle extract” as a verified vinpocetine amount; FDA says vinpocetine is not a plant constituent. [1]

In 23 products labelled as containing vinpocetine, six contained none. The 17 positive products ranged from 0.3 to 32 mg per recommended daily serving, and three labels implied vinpocetine naturally occurred in lesser periwinkle. [5]

What does the human evidence show?

Dementia and cognitive impairment

The Cochrane review found three pre-1990 studies with 583 participants. Although 30- and 60-mg daily totals showed signals versus placebo, diagnoses were poorly differentiated, few people had at least six months of treatment, adverse effects were inconsistently reported and no trial provided intention-to-treat data. The review concluded that evidence was inconclusive and did not support clinical use. [2]

Hindmarch 1991 randomized 203 people to 10 mg three times daily, 20 mg three times daily or placebo for 16 weeks. Its “organic psychosyndrome” category included primary dementia but does not map cleanly to modern diagnoses. [3]

Healthy volunteers and epilepsy

In 2021, eight healthy adults completed placebo and 10-, 20- and 60-mg single-dose crossover conditions. Eight people with focal epilepsy received a placebo/20-mg crossover, followed by 20 mg three times daily open-label for one month. Neither group showed significant cognitive benefit. [4]

Acute ischemic stroke

A 2022 meta-analysis included four placebo-controlled RCTs with 601 vinpocetine and 236 placebo participants. It found promising disability signals but insufficient case-fatality evidence and called for adequate double-blind trials before routine use. This supervised acute-care evidence does not establish oral self-treatment. [7]

How might it work?

Proposed actions include phosphodiesterase-1 inhibition, vascular effects, sodium-channel effects and inflammatory signaling. These mechanisms do not prove better memory, prevent dementia or establish a consumer dose.

What are the risks and interactions?

FDA advises pregnant women and women who could become pregnant not to take vinpocetine because reviewed data suggest miscarriage or fetal-development risk. [1] The Canadian product record contraindicates pregnancy and breastfeeding. [6]

The Canadian record warns that vinpocetine may increase bleeding and slow clotting, advises avoiding blood thinners such as aspirin, warfarin and ibuprofen, and says to stop at least two weeks before surgery. It also flags low blood pressure and palpitations. Listed effects include stomach pain, nausea, sleep disturbance, headache, dizziness, nervousness and hypersensitivity. [6]

Seek urgent care for possible stroke symptoms, severe bleeding, fainting, severe palpitations, chest pain, facial or throat swelling, or pregnancy exposure with concerning symptoms.

Legal status in the United States and Canada

In the United States, FDA says vinpocetine is synthetic and has tentatively concluded that it does not meet the dietary-ingredient definition and may be excluded because it was investigated as a drug first. The current FDA page presents these conclusions as tentative, not a final blanket ban. [1]

In Canada, product-specific NPN records exist. NPN 80095788 lists a 10-mg tablet and defined warnings. This does not make every product equivalent or establish broad clinical efficacy. [6]

What should you monitor?

Record product, lot, measured or declared milligrams, administrations, medicines affecting bleeding or blood pressure, pregnancy potential, procedure dates, headache, dizziness, stomach symptoms, sleep and palpitations.

What happens when you stop?

No evidence-based taper or withdrawal syndrome is established. Before surgery, follow the surgical team's stop instructions; the Canadian product record specifies at least two weeks. [6]

How should it be stored?

Follow the label, keep it dry and away from heat, and preserve lot and expiry details. Keep it away from children.

How does vinpocetine compare with other approaches?

Vinpocetine is not equivalent to periwinkle, prescription dementia care or emergency stroke treatment. Cognitive concerns require assessment for sleep, mood, medicines, hearing, vascular disease and neurologic causes.

Ginkgo, huperzine A and bacopa have different preparations, mechanisms and evidence. Combining them does not make an evidence-based nootropic stack.

What do public communities add?

Community reports can flag headaches, dizziness, sleep effects and mislabeled blends. They cannot verify the active amount, assess pregnancy risk or distinguish a supplement effect from a neurologic illness.

Common questions

Is vinpocetine a natural periwinkle ingredient?

No. FDA states that vinpocetine is synthetic and is not a constituent of periwinkle or other plants. [1]

Does it improve memory in healthy adults?

The small 2021 crossover study found no significant cognitive benefit. [4]

Does it treat dementia?

Cochrane judged the old evidence inconclusive and not supportive of clinical use. [2]

Can it be used for an acute stroke?

No self-treatment. Stroke symptoms require emergency services; research treatment occurred in supervised acute-care settings. [7]

Is 30 or 60 mg a once-daily dose?

Not in the Hindmarch trial. Those totals came from 10 or 20 mg administered three times daily. [3]

Are supplement labels reliable?

Not consistently: six of 23 sampled products had no detected vinpocetine, and positive products ranged 0.3–32 mg per daily serving. [5]

Is it safe in pregnancy?

FDA advises pregnant women and women who could become pregnant not to take it. [1]

Does a Canadian NPN prove efficacy?

No. It is a licence for one product and its conditions, not proof that all vinpocetine products are equivalent. [6]

How this guide was researched

This draft prioritized FDA's current page, Cochrane's dementia review, the source 1991 trial, the 2021 cognition study, the 23-product analysis, a Canadian licence record and the 2022 stroke meta-analysis. It separates daily total from administration frequency and preserves regulatory uncertainty. Evidence was refreshed October 9, 2026.

How this guide was made

The ledger records exact schedules, access level, diagnosis limits and product-specific regulation.

Research method and gaps

FDA and the Canadian product record were read directly. Trial and review identities were checked through PubMed; the vinpocetine product analysis was also checked in publisher full text.

Gaps include modern dementia trials, large healthy-person studies, long-term safety and the final U.S. dietary-ingredient status.
